Charleen’s story begins in South Gate, California, where she was born to her loving parents, Helen Palmer and Arnold Beito. Growing up alongside her siblings, Dennis and Pam, in the bustling heart of Los Angeles, Charleen’s early years were full of energy and community. Attending Downey High School, she was a spirited yell leader, rallying school pride with enthusiasm. When she wasn’t cheering on her classmates, you could find her at the school pool, sharing her love of swimming by teaching lessons to eager students.

It was by that very pool where fate stepped in—Charleen met Lawrence Zech Sr. The story has a playful spark: Lawrence had bet his friends he could win a date with her. Turns out, it wasn’t just a bet—it was the start of a lifetime. Their high school romance blossomed on and off, eventually leading them to marry after graduation.

Lawrence built a steady career at the Los Angeles Times, working in the stereotype department where he crafted plates for the printing process. He dedicated 25 years to his work before his passing, having been a pioneer as the first kidney transplant recipient in Southern California. Through it all, Charleen stood by, a steadfast partner and mother.

Charleen poured her heart into creating a warm, loving home, choosing to be a stay-at-home mom to their three children: Lawrence Jr. (Robin), Sharon (David), and Dennis (Sandee). Their family grew with joy and laughter, now including eight grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and even a great-great-granddaughter—a true legacy of love.

Once her children were grown, Charleen stepped into a new role, serving her community as a police dispatcher in Compton. Her years on the job reflected her dedication and care for those around her.

The Zech family cherished their time together, especially their annual two-week camping trips to Yosemite—a tradition filled with adventure and memories. Summers were often spent on the water, cruising and skiing behind their beloved ski boat, making the most of every sunny day.

Faith and friendship are also close to Charleen’s heart. She is a devoted attendee of Calvary Chapel in Old Towne Orange County, where she engaged in Bible study and found fellowship. Her love for the outdoors shines through in her daily walks, and she has a knack for making friends wherever life takes her.

We are truly grateful that Charleen calls Legacy Village of Cleveland home. Her warm spirit and welcoming smile brighten our community, making it a better place for all of us.
