Born in Akron, Ohio, Ethel was the eldest daughter of Forrest and Lucille Goodman, growing up alongside her one brother and two sisters. She spent her childhood on a beautiful 100-acre farm in Greensburg, Ohio, where the family raised wheat, corn, cattle, and milk cows. Ethel didn’t just grow up on the farm—she thrived there. She loved the hard work, the early mornings, and the deep sense of purpose that came from farming life. Those days shaped her strong work ethic and grounded spirit.

Athletic and full of energy, Ethel ran track and jumped into any sport she could squeeze in. She graduated from Greensburg High School in 1955 and soon after began her professional journey at First National Bank of Akron. Starting as a teller and administrative assistant, she found her stride in credit collections—a field where her sharp mind and steady determination would shine for years to come.

In 1960, Ethel met the love of her life, Al, at church. What began there blossomed quickly into a beautiful partnership. Al was a country music star, and together they shared 43 loving years filled with faith, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Their marriage was a testament to true partnership, with a bond that touched everyone who knew them.

Later, Ethel moved to Texas, calling it home for 35 years. She continued her work in credit collections and even had the unique experience of working for celebrated author Sandra Brown before retiring in 2007. Retirement led her to Tennessee, where she settled and embraced a new chapter of life.

Creativity has always been close to Ethel’s heart. She loves to crochet, crafting pieces that she often gifts or sells, each stitch a reflection of her care and skill. She also finds joy in sketching—especially barns—and designing dresses, blending her rural roots with a keen eye for beauty and detail. Her artistic spirit brings warmth and charm wherever it goes.

A devoted member of Cornerstone Apostolic Church, Ethel’s faith has been a cornerstone throughout her life. Though she can no longer attend services in person, her faith remains a guiding light, steady and strong. While she never had children of her own, she is surrounded by a close-knit circle of friends and church family who cherish her deeply.

Ethel’s sparkling, sassy personality is a beacon of light for everyone around her. Her warmth, strength, and spirited charm brighten the days of both staff and residents alike. We feel truly blessed to have Ethel as a treasured part of The Harbor family at Legacy Village of Cleveland.

Charleen’s story begins in South Gate, California, where she was born to her loving parents, Helen Palmer and Arnold Beito. Growing up alongside her siblings, Dennis and Pam, in the bustling heart of Los Angeles, Charleen’s early years were full of energy and community. Attending Downey High School, she was a spirited yell leader, rallying school pride with enthusiasm. When she wasn’t cheering on her classmates, you could find her at the school pool, sharing her love of swimming by teaching lessons to eager students.

It was by that very pool where fate stepped in—Charleen met Lawrence Zech Sr. The story has a playful spark: Lawrence had bet his friends he could win a date with her. Turns out, it wasn’t just a bet—it was the start of a lifetime. Their high school romance blossomed on and off, eventually leading them to marry after graduation.

Lawrence built a steady career at the Los Angeles Times, working in the stereotype department where he crafted plates for the printing process. He dedicated 25 years to his work before his passing, having been a pioneer as the first kidney transplant recipient in Southern California. Through it all, Charleen stood by, a steadfast partner and mother.

Charleen poured her heart into creating a warm, loving home, choosing to be a stay-at-home mom to their three children: Lawrence Jr. (Robin), Sharon (David), and Dennis (Sandee). Their family grew with joy and laughter, now including eight grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and even a great-great-granddaughter—a true legacy of love.

Once her children were grown, Charleen stepped into a new role, serving her community as a police dispatcher in Compton. Her years on the job reflected her dedication and care for those around her.

The Zech family cherished their time together, especially their annual two-week camping trips to Yosemite—a tradition filled with adventure and memories. Summers were often spent on the water, cruising and skiing behind their beloved ski boat, making the most of every sunny day.

Faith and friendship are also close to Charleen’s heart. She is a devoted attendee of Calvary Chapel in Old Towne Orange County, where she engaged in Bible study and found fellowship. Her love for the outdoors shines through in her daily walks, and she has a knack for making friends wherever life takes her.

We are truly grateful that Charleen calls Legacy Village of Cleveland home. Her warm spirit and welcoming smile brighten our community, making it a better place for all of us.

If you want to know what matters most to Elizabeth “Liz” Ball, just ask her about family dinners after Sunday church. Born in Harlan, Kentucky, to Walter and Mattie Jeffery, Liz grew up in the little town of Crummies, where her father worked long days as a coal miner and her mother kept the household running. Liz remembers a house full of laughter, her brother Walter Jr. and sister Betty Sue by her side, and the special Saturdays when her grandmother and aunt arrived for the weekend. They’d pile into the car to go grocery shopping, all looking forward to the big meal they’d share after church—something Liz still calls one of her favorite traditions.

School days were busy and bright: Crummies Elementary, Grays Knob High, afternoons filled with 4H Club projects and Girl Scout meetings. But it was a drive-in diner where Liz’s next chapter began—she met Leonard Campbell Ball there, and from that first meeting, something just clicked. Liz and Leonard both ended up in Richmond for college: Leonard poured himself into accounting, earning his CPA degree, while Liz studied Home Economics at Eastern State College. They married in 1959, and over the years welcomed two children, Priscilla and Byron. Family kept growing, too—now there are four grandchildren (Carrie, Amanda, Kyla, and Sarah) and two great-grandchildren, Decker and Katherine, all part of Liz’s proudest legacy.

After college, Liz devoted herself to raising her children and making a home where everyone felt welcome. The Ball family eventually moved to Kingsport, Tennessee, for Leonard’s CPA work. Liz threw herself into every part of her kids’ lives: cheering Byron on at tennis matches, applauding Priscilla at dance recitals, always present and always encouraging.

Church has always been at the heart of Liz’s world. The Balls were fixtures at First Baptist Church in Kingsport, where Liz taught Sunday School to a room full of energetic third-graders and Leonard served as a deacon, helped run the church’s finances, and stayed active in the Baptist Association.

Liz’s calendar was always full—bridge club, church ladies’ groups, concerts with friends, and supper club dinner parties that left everyone smiling. She loved her weekend getaways, especially her yearly trips to Gatlinburg to hear David Jeremiah speak. And when she tells the story of the 19-day church group road trip across the country, she still laughs about how the preacher cut the adventure short so everyone could make it home in time for church.

These days, Liz calls Legacy Village of Cleveland home. She’s a regular at devotions and church services, cherishes her friendships, and brings that same warmth and spirit to everyone she meets. We’re grateful Liz chose Legacy Village, and it’s our joy to honor her.

Wayne Standifer grew up surrounded by family, mountains, and the spirit of adventure. The youngest of eight children, Wayne was born to H.B. and Hattie Standifer in Cumberland, Kentucky, where his father worked long hours as a coal miner for U.S. Steel Mining Company and his mother held the family together at home. Wayne’s childhood was filled with the simple joys of the outdoors—he loved hiking the mountain trails near home and was rarely seen without his loyal dog, Lassie.

School came naturally to Wayne. At Cumberland Elementary and Cumberland High, he made his mark as an active student, joining the Boy Scouts, Future Teachers of America, and the Beta Club. He was the kind of kid who always seemed to be doing something, whether it was leading a group or pitching in to help.

After high school, Wayne’s curiosity and work ethic pulled him to Louisville, Kentucky, where he spent a year at K.M. White working with wired elevator controls. But the pull of education was strong, and soon he enrolled at Berea College. His family moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, but Wayne kept roots in both places—working summers at K.M. White and holding a weekly 10-hour work-study job in the college library. After four years, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.

Wayne’s first teaching job brought him back to Kentucky. At Benham Elementary, he spent four years in the classroom and three more as a librarian, all while earning his Master of Library Science (MLS) degree from the University of Kentucky. Those early years set the tone for a career built on service and lifelong learning.

New opportunities called Wayne to Cleveland, Tennessee, and a position at Lee College’s library office. That’s where he met Betty Robbins at the circulation desk. Betty had come from Georgia to finish her own degree in Education, and soon, their friendship turned into something more. They married and began a life together built on teaching, learning, and mutual support.

Wayne and Betty moved to Georgia, where Wayne became a Media Specialist in the Whitfield County School System. He continued his own education at the University of Georgia, earning his Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree, and spent 32 years serving students and teachers before retiring from the Georgia Teachers Retirement System.

Retirement didn’t slow Wayne down. He and Betty moved to Chattanooga and returned to Lee University, where Wayne wore many hats: Reference Librarian, Faculty Liaison, College of Education Liaison, and collection development specialist. He devoted another 15 years to the university before retiring for a second time. Together, Wayne and Betty shared 34 years of marriage and over 100 years of teaching experience between them. Wayne himself has dedicated more than 51 years to education and librarianship.

Wayne’s commitment to service has always gone beyond the classroom. He’s a member of City Church of Chattanooga and attends Westmore Church of God, where he’s led youth groups, classes, Vacation Bible School, and served on many church committees. His love of learning is matched by a love of travel—he and Betty explored the Swiss and French Alps, extending the hiking habit Wayne picked up in his Kentucky childhood. He also found joy in music, attending operas and symphony concerts at the Tivoli.

These days, Wayne enjoys reading, listening to music, and being a part of his church community. When asked what he loves most about Legacy Village, he doesn’t hesitate: “All the residents and all the staff are wonderful.” We’re grateful Wayne chose Legacy Village of Cleveland as his home and are honored to celebrate him.

Born on April 13, 1934, in the charming little town of Harperville, Mississippi, Nan Gilbert grew up surrounded by wide open fields, family, and faith. As the sixth of seven children—five older brothers to keep her on her toes and one younger sister to keep her company, Nan learned early on the joys of hard work and the value of togetherness.

Nan’s childhood was spent on her family’s farm, where her parents, Benjamin and Lola, raised a variety of crops and a few livestock. Life on the farm wasn’t always easy, but Nan remembers it fondly, especially the sweet summer days spent swimming and fishing with her siblings, making the most of every moment in the great outdoors.

A proud graduate of Harperville High School, Nan showed her competitive spirit on the basketball court and dabbled in softball as well. But her heart was set on caring for others, which led her to the Gilfoy School of Nursing in Jackson. After earning her nursing degree and becoming a Registered Nurse, she began her career at a Baptist Hospital, where fate introduced her to a kind-hearted physical therapist named J.T. The pair got along quite well, and before long, the two were married.

Nan and J.T. built a beautiful life together and raised three wonderful daughters—Gail (Webb), Mona (Steve), and Debbie (Danny). Nan calls them her greatest accomplishments, and she beams with pride when talking about the strong, compassionate women they’ve become. Putting her career on hold to raise her girls, Nan devoted herself fully to her family. Once her daughters were grown, she returned to nursing, this time providing care and comfort as a home health nurse until her retirement.

These days, Nan is the proud matriarch of a growing family that includes six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Whether it’s sharing stories from her farm days, offering a listening ear, or simply enjoying the laughter of little ones around her, Nan’s life continues to be rich in love and purpose.

From Harperville fields to hospital halls, and now to a well-earned retirement, Nan is a shining example of a life well lived. These days, one can find her at Legacy Village of Cleveland enjoying church services, playing dominoes with friends, and watching her favorite television shows. We are blessed to know her here at Legacy!

Social connection plays a powerful role in protecting mental and emotional well-being as we age, yet it is often one of the first things to fade when seniors live alone. Changes in health, mobility or daily routine can make it harder to stay socially engaged, leading many older adults to experience isolation without realizing it. Moving into a senior living community like Legacy Village of Cleveland can be a meaningful step toward restoring connection, purpose and a sense of belonging as well as a means to keeping the mind sharp.

One of the greatest benefits of senior living is the built-in opportunity for daily interaction. Instead of relying on occasional visits or scheduled outings, residents are surrounded by peers and team members who become part of everyday life. Shared meals, group activities and casual conversations create natural moments of connection that help seniors feel less alone and more emotionally supported. Friendships formed often become deep and meaningful, offering comfort during both joyful and challenging moments.

Social engagement also supports mental sharpness and emotional resilience. Legacy Village of Cleveland offers structured programs such as musical events, games, classes and creative activities that encourage conversation and learning. These experiences help keep the mind active while providing excitement for the days ahead. For many seniors, having something to look forward to each day makes a meaningful difference in overall outlook.

For families, choosing senior living can bring peace of mind. Knowing a loved one is socially connected and emotionally supported eases concerns about loneliness and isolation. Families often notice positive changes after a move, including improved mood, increased engagement and a renewed sense of joy in their loved one’s daily life.

Ultimately, moving into a senior living community is not about giving something up. It is about gaining connection, companionship and support. By prioritizing social interaction and meaningful relationships, Legacy Village of Cleveland helps seniors protect their mental and emotional health while enjoying a fuller, more connected way of life.

After the busy holiday season, many seniors notice changes in energy levels, mobility or comfort, making the New Year a natural time for families to pause and consider what support will help their loved ones feel their best. New Year care focuses on thoughtful steps that nurture independence, confidence and quality of life throughout the year. For some seniors who may be feeling the effects of aging, a senior living community that emphasizes whole-person wellness, such as Legacy Village of Cleveland, can offer the right balance of support, connection and peace of mind for both residents and families.

One important part of New Year care is access to therapy services that help seniors maintain strength, balance and independence. Physical and occupational therapy can play a key role in improving mobility, supporting recovery and enhancing daily routines. At Legacy Village, therapy services are coordinated with care teams, making it easier for residents to participate consistently and work toward goals that support long-term wellness.

Pain management is another essential focus as seniors begin the year. Chronic pain can affect more than just physical comfort; it can also impact mood, sleep and overall quality of life. Senior living communities take a comprehensive approach to pain management, combining medical oversight, therapy, movement and comfort-focused strategies. This collaborative care helps ensure concerns are addressed early, allowing residents to remain engaged and comfortable in their daily lives.

Staying active is a powerful way for seniors to support both physical and emotional well-being. Regular movement helps maintain flexibility, strength and balance while also encouraging social connection. At Legacy Village of Cleveland, residents have access to a variety of opportunities to stay active, from gentle exercise classes and walking groups to wellness programs designed to meet residents where they are. These activities are thoughtfully structured to be safe, enjoyable and empowering.

Equally important to physical care is the social connection that supports mental and emotional wellbeing. Legacy Village offers daily opportunities for meaningful interaction, whether through shared meals, group activities, creative programs or simple conversations with neighbors and team members who truly know each resident. These moments of connection help reduce feelings of isolation, encourage a sense of belonging and bring joy to everyday life.

For families, knowing a loved one is supported by a compassionate team that prioritizes therapy, pain management and active living can provide lasting peace of mind. By focusing on whole-person wellness, Legacy Village of Cleveland help residents begin the year feeling supported, capable and connected, creating a strong foundation for health and happiness in the months ahead.

For Robert Bryant Wilson, III, every chapter of his life feels stitched into the land and community of Bradley County. Born in Speck Hospital in downtown Cleveland, Tennessee, Robert, a resident of The Harbor at Legacy Village of Cleveland, holds the proud distinction of being the oldest of three children raised by Robert and Patsy Wilson. The Wilson family marked their days on a dairy farm in Walker Valley. From his earliest years, Robert pitched in alongside his father and grandfather, learning both the daily lessons of farming and the deep bonds of family.

School brought its own achievements. Robert was an honor graduate at every step: first at Charleston High School, then Cleveland State Community College, and Tennessee Wesleyan College, before earning his law degree from the University of Tennessee School of Law. Even then, the family’s ethic of hard work traveled with him.

His legal career began with William K. Fillauer, and over the years, their partnership (Fillauer & Wilson, later Wilson Law) became an institution in Southeast Tennessee. Robert’s practice spanned thirty-eight years before being joined by his son, Tim, in 2015. With the firm now named Wilson Law, the family legacy grew even stronger. By the time Robert retired from private practice in January 2020, he had faithfully served the region for forty-three years. He especially cherished the friendships and conversations he shared with the many clients who came through his door—those connections were the heart of his work.

Outside of his private practice, Robert answered the call of public service. In 1978, he was appointed Charleston’s City Judge, a post he would hold with distinction for forty-six years until his retirement in 2024. He loved serving the Charleston community, whether presiding over municipal matters or representing the city at state and national judicial trainings, including time at the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada. Early in his legal career, he also served as County Attorney for Polk County Government and its School Board.

It was during those years Robert’s personal life took a wonderful turn—an introduction to Sherry, the daughter of Polk County’s Superintendent of Schools, Margaret Smiley. Three months after they met, Robert and Sherry married, beginning a shared journey that brought them two sons, Rob (married to Angela) and Tim (married to Mari Beth). Their family grew to include four grandsons: Bryant, Carter, Wyatt, and Wesley. Robert finds endless joy in the company of his sons, daughters-in-law, and grandsons, relishing every chance to spend time together.

In 1987, Robert and Sherry purchased his grandmother’s farm—a living piece of family heritage. Robert found both work and delight there: riding his red tractor across the fields, maintaining the River House and barns, or shaping wood from the land’s own oak and walnut trees into beautiful furniture. On quiet afternoons, he could often be found with a fishing rod in hand, sharing the lake with his sons and grandsons. The farm has become a beloved gathering place for friends and family alike.

His passion for fishing sometimes called him further—from spontaneous road trips to the Florida panhandle to days spent deep sea fishing on a charter boat after closing up his law office. But no matter how far Robert’s travels took him, there was never any place he'd rather return to than Bradley County and the rhythm of life on the River Farm.

Robert’s faith is rooted just as deeply. Since childhood, he’s attended Charleston Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Like his great-grandfather, William Moore, he has served as an Elder—and today, his Aunt Mary Tim Burgin and his son Rob serve as Elders as well.

A lifelong resident of Bradley County, Robert has welcomed the world’s breadth but always finds his greatest contentment in coming home. In every facet of his life—son, brother, husband, father, attorney, city judge, craftsman, and elder—he has built a legacy of service, kindness, and quiet strength that still shapes the community he loves.

Legacy Village of Cleveland resident Nancy Erwin grew up in a house that never felt empty. With three brothers, two sisters, and parents who set the bar for kindness and generosity, life was full—of noise, of laughter, and of lessons that stuck. Thanks to Gene and Grace Webb, Nancy learned early that togetherness was the heart of everything worth having.

Adventure was a way of life. Nancy and her siblings spent hours riding bikes along wooded trails, their laughter echoing through the trees. There were evenings at ball games with her father, summer road trips crammed into the family car, and stories swapped on the porch as the sun went down. Some of Nancy’s favorite memories, though, come from watching her mother in quieter moments—especially around Christmas, when Grace would find ways to help families who needed a little extra. Nancy grew up absorbing that example: giving quietly, and often, without expecting anything in return.

Teenage years brought a love of theater at Englewood High School, and there was never a shortage of cousins or stories at the sprawling family reunions that filled her calendar. But everything changed on Senior Day at Tennessee Wesleyan College. There, Nancy was introduced to Bob Erwin—the young man she'd been set up to meet on a blind date. Bob had already heard she’d be there, and when he spotted her, he nodded and announced, “She’ll do.” Not too much later, those words turned into “I do,” and a lifelong partnership began.

After high school, Nancy set off to Belmont College. Even when illness brought her home—eventually diagnosed as a seizure disorder from a childhood injury—her steady relationship with Bob didn’t waver. He graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan, and the two married, ready to start their life together.

Settling in Bradley County, Nancy and Bob made a home that thrived on love, learning, and faith. Bob began teaching and soon took on new roles, rising from classroom teacher to principal and finally to School Supervisor in the Bradley County school system. His dedication to education became part of the family’s legacy. Nancy devoted herself to raising their children, Scott and Lisa, throwing herself into their interests—whether she was carting Scott’s art supplies to shows and carving events, or cheering Lisa from the bleachers at cheerleading competitions. Their home was filled with creativity, movement, and unconditional support.

When the kids grew up, Nancy found a new passion in antiques. She opened a booth at the local mall and spent weekends traveling to shows from Knoxville to Atlanta, finding treasures, sharing stories, and keeping her love for history alive. At home, she poured her energy into restoring their 200-year-old house—a labor of love that drew together her eye for design and her respect for the past.

Nancy never lost her knack for hospitality. Gardening, decorating, planning celebrations—she welcomed friends and family with open arms, making sure every gathering left people feeling like they belonged.

Today, Nancy brings that same warmth and spark to Legacy Village of Cleveland. She can often be found with a good book, at the bingo table, or holding her own in a game of cornhole, always with a smile and a spirited sense of fun. Her kindness, her stories, and the history she carries light up every room she enters.

Legacy is fortunate to count Nancy Erwin as part of the community—a neighbor who reminds everyone what a lasting difference generosity and joy can make.

Pam was born in Dayton, Ohio, in 1948 to Daniel and Maxine Macher. She grew up in a loving family alongside her elder sister Gayle, her twin brother Paul and his wife Denise, and her younger sister Jenny. Her father, Daniel, was an aircraft mechanic who had the honor of crewing for Chuck Yeager several times and later worked at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Her mother, Maxine, was a dedicated homemaker who passed down her love of cooking and sewing to Pam—skills that would later bless countless lives.

As a child, Pam delighted in designing clothes for paper dolls and playing kick-the-can with neighborhood friends on warm summer nights. Her lifelong love of music began early; she played clarinet in high school, often earning first chair, and sang in a special vocal group called the Triple Trio, winning top honors in state competitions.

After graduating from Vandalia Butler High School, Pam attended Ohio State University, where she earned her undergraduate degree in education and specialized in working with deaf and developmentally disabled children. She went on to complete her master’s degree at Antioch University, graduating at the top of her class. Pam’s passion for teaching was evident early on—she was named Ohio Teacher of the Year, leading instructional workshops for educators across the state. Together with her sister Gayle, she developed preschool programs, with Pam writing the lessons and Gayle illustrating them.

One of the most beautiful moments in Pam’s journey was when she accepted Jesus into her heart. In a divine coincidence, her twin brother Paul accepted Christ that very same evening—each at a different church! From that day forward, Pam’s faith became the foundation for her life and work.

Pam met her husband in a pottery class—he was the instructor (who later became a pastor), and she quickly became both his best student and his life partner. Their shared love of creativity blossomed into a thriving pottery business. Together, they were among the top sellers at Dayton’s Oktoberfest arts festival during the 1970s and 80s. Pam designed and painted each piece by hand, adding imaginative details that made their art truly one-of-a-kind.

Throughout her career, Pam poured her heart into education. She began by teaching kindergarten students with developmental and hearing challenges for nearly a decade. After raising her three daughters—Katie, Rebekah, and Elizabeth—she returned to the classroom, teaching kindergarten at Christian Life Center for more than 10 years. Later, she transitioned to higher education, teaching early childhood education at Clark State Community College, where she inspired a new generation of teachers until her retirement in 2018. Even in retirement, Pam continued to serve through children’s ministries at her local churches in Ohio and Tennessee.

Pam’s heart for ministry was clear in every area of her life. She and her husband served together in many capacities, including a thriving singles ministry that brought many couples together in marriage. She also sang on praise teams, volunteered in children’s classrooms, and helped prepare meals at local food kitchens. Alongside her twin brother Paul, she used her remarkable cooking talents to serve hundreds of people with warmth and grace.

Pam’s creativity was endless—whether making dresses for her children, crafting unique pottery, baking homemade breads and pies, or turning an ordinary cheese ball into a festive holiday turkey or Christmas tree. At Christmastime, she was famous for gifting beautifully arranged plates of hand-decorated cookies to neighbors and friends. Her resourcefulness as a teacher shone through in her ability to transform anything—a sock, a pot scrubber, or even a paper plate—into a delightful puppet or learning activity for children.

Outside the classroom and church, Pam loved the outdoors—hiking and camping with her husband, exploring the Smoky Mountains on their honeymoon, and later enjoying kayaking and biking adventures with her sister Jenny’s family. And of course, she was a proud fan of her beloved Ohio State Buckeyes—especially football!

Born in Glen Cove, New York, and raised in Port Washington, Long Island, Ione Battles grew up surrounded by family, music, and love. Her father, Charles Newbold, was a Marine in World War II, and her mother, Louise, worked as a riveter during the war before becoming a homemaker. As one of five children, Ione grew up alongside her four brothers — Laurie, Kern, Robin, and Gordon.

She attended school in Port Washington until the fourth grade, when her family moved to Huntington Beach, California, and she attended Sunset Beach School. After returning to New York, she graduated from Port Washington High School. Ione fondly remembers singing around the piano with her family and selling her mother’s homemade fudge and divinity at Christmastime.

Active and involved from a young age, Ione was a Girl Scout and a dedicated choir member. After high school, she moved to Vermont and worked on the Button Family Farm, where she met Edward Button. The couple dated for two years before marrying, and not long after, Edward joined the Navy. During his time in the service, they lived in several states, including Michigan and Virginia, while Ione managed life on the family farm and cared for their growing family.

Together, Ione and Edward raised four children — Debbie (David), Terry, Mike (Michelle), and Andy (Tracy) — and later welcomed six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. After Edward retired, the family lived in Maryland, Massachusetts, and Vermont. Edward worked as an electronics technician, and Ione built a career as a bookkeeper and bank teller at Granite Bank before retiring. She later worked at Brookhaven Home for Boys and even ran a daycare during Edward’s Navy years.

After 37 wonderful years of marriage, Edward passed away. Some time later, while volunteering at the State House, Ione reconnected with Jim Battles, a friend of Edward’s from the Navy. Their shared memories grew into a deep companionship, and six months later, they married. Ione and Jim spent 15 happy years in Vermont before moving to Florida, where they enjoyed traveling and going on cruises. One of Ione’s favorite adventures was a two-week trip through several national parks in the West.

Ione has always loved reading, sewing, cooking, and knitting. A devoted member of the Methodist Church, she has volunteered in many roles — from helping with the food pantry to serving as library treasurer and property lister.

Today, Ione and Jim reside at Legacy Village of Cleveland, where they moved to be closer to family. She enjoys socializing, making friends, participating in therapy activities, and playing dominoes. Her warmth, faith, and positive spirit brighten the lives of everyone around her.

Caring for Seniors During the Holidays: Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Make the Move

The holiday season is often filled with family gatherings, joyful traditions and meaningful moments—but for many families caring for an aging loved one, it can also be one of the most stressful times of the year. As routines change and days get busier, meeting the needs of aging parents or grandparents can become more complex, leaving family caregivers feeling stretched thin. While many families consider senior living as a helpful next step, they often hesitate to make the transition before the holidays. Common concerns include the fear that a loved one will feel lonely or abandoned, the worry it will disrupt the season and family traditions, or bring judgment from family and friends. But for many families, waiting may actually increase stress for both seniors and caregivers rather than ease it.

In reality, moving into a senior living community before the holidays can be one of the most supportive decisions a family can make. At Legacy Village of Cleveland, the holidays are filled with festive events, warm social connections and compassionate team members who help residents feel at home quickly. Rather than spending the season stressed and exhausted, families can share more meaningful, quality time together—free from the pressures of caregiving tasks and safety concerns. Legacy Village encourages visits, whether it is at their community or at home for Christmas dinner. Instead of a disruption, the move often brings relief, stability and more joy to everyone involved.

The holidays can also highlight areas where a senior needs additional support: increased confusion in busy environments, difficulty navigating crowded gatherings and challenges with mobility often become more noticeable this time of year. Legacy Village of Cleveland is trained to meet these needs in a way that keeps the season enjoyable. For those with limited mobility, communities offer accessible events, transportation assistance, and safe, thoughtfully designed spaces—ensuring seniors can still participate in the traditions they love. For residents living with Alzheimer’s or dementia, structured activities, sensory-friendly celebrations and predictable daily routines help prevent overstimulation and confusion. These specialized supports help families worry less and give seniors a safer, more comfortable holiday environment.

Christmas-time is already hectic, and many caregivers are already juggling managing medications, preparing meals, assisting with personal care and coordinating doctor’s visits. By moving a loved one into a community before the holiday rush, caregivers gain the gift of rest. Rather than carrying the full weight alone, they can rely on a team of trained professionals who are available around the clock. This relief allows caregivers to enjoy holiday moments more fully—sharing stories over dinner, watching favorite movies together or simply being present without the pressure of caregiving.

It’s also important to remember that the transition into senior living doesn’t erase family traditions—it often enhances them. Families can decorate their loved one’s new apartment together, bring treasured holiday recipes to share or join community events designed to include residents and their families. If your family has been considering senior living but putting it off until the new year, this season may actually be the perfect time to make the move. With compassionate care, festive community life and support tailored to each resident’s needs, Legacy Village of Cleveland can help bring peace, comfort and joy to your loved one and to you.

You don’t need to know Jean Clouse’s long list of accomplishments to feel her presence; her gentle heart and welcoming smile speak for themselves. Her story is one of quiet adventure, deep devotion, and a knack for finding joy wherever she goes.

Willa Jean Clouse was born in Sparta, Tennessee, on September 21, 1932, to Ray and Beulah McDole. Her childhood was shaped by the hum of her father’s service station and the laughter echoing from the roller-skating rink he owned next door. It was in that rink that Jean first laced up a pair of skates, gliding in circles until she became a true standout on wheels. Though she grew up as an only child, Jean never lacked for friends, her warmth drawing people in from the start.

Jean graduated from White County High School in her hometown, and it was there that she married her childhood sweetheart, Glyn Clouse. Glyn made a career as an engineer, designing and surveying interstate highways for the Tennessee Road Department. Together, Jean and Glyn welcomed two daughters, Glynda and Shawna, and their home filled with laughter and love.

Seeking to be closer to Glyn’s family, the Clouses made a move to Indiana. But their hearts remained in Tennessee, and after just a year, they returned to Sparta. There, Jean began a thirty-five-year career as Office Manager at Red Kap Industries. She was the steady hand who hired new staff, managed payroll, and kept the daily workings of the office running smoothly. Her commitment and care supported the company’s success for decades.

Jean’s life in Sparta was also rich with faith and community. She was a devoted member of Sparta First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and shared her kindness with friends and neighbors. In her free time, she found adventure in the outdoors—waterskiing across sparkling Tennessee lakes and tending her flower garden, always eager for a new thrill or a quiet moment surrounded by blooms.

When retirement called, Jean moved to Cleveland, Tennessee, to be closer to Shawna and her grandson, Chandler. She joined Wesley Memorial Methodist Church and threw herself into the joys of gardening, transforming her backyard into a vibrant display of blooms. She loved nothing more than a road trip to the beach or a drive through the mountains, but her greatest happiness came from time spent with her family—especially Chandler.

In 2015, Chandler married his fiancée, Morgan, and five years later, the family welcomed a baby girl, Willa, named in Jean’s honor. It’s a legacy she cherishes.

Today, Jean can often be found enjoying the fresh air with her daughter Shawna, bringing a quiet sense of care and kindness to everyone she meets. She’s known for her gentle spirit, her compassion toward staff and neighbors, and her ever-ready willingness to help. The Harbor Plus community at Legacy Village of Cleveland is truly blessed to have Jean’s nurturing presence and sweet smile among us.

If you haven’t met Jean yet, just look for the flowers—or follow the sound of laughter on the patio. She’ll be there, sharing her warmth with all who pass by.

If you walk the halls of Legacy Village of Cleveland on a sunny afternoon, you might spot Sarah. Her laughter rises above the hum of conversation, her eyes bright with the warmth of a thousand memories. Sarah was born in Carrabelle, Florida, to Edward and Frankie Winchester. She and her brother, Franklin—affectionately known as Buddy—spent their days exploring with their black and white collie, Snooper, on sandy streets that smelled of salt and adventure.

Sarah’s early years took her from Florida to New Orleans, where she attended Caddo School, and then to Brownsville, Texas. There, she sang in the school choir, earned her letter for her sweater, babysat neighborhood children, and learned to sew, all while finishing her studies at Brownsville Elementary and High School.

After graduation, Sarah attended R&M Business School for two years, taking courses in banking and bookkeeping. She soon started working as a bank teller at Brownsville Savings and Loan. Around this time, Sarah met Rex, the preacher’s son at Simpson St. Baptist Church, where she was a member. Their relationship grew, and it wasn’t long before Sarah and Rex were married.

When Rex’s parents moved to Lamar, Colorado for his father’s church position, Sarah and Rex followed, beginning a new chapter together. In Lamar, Sarah worked as a bookkeeper at a local drug store, and soon their family grew with the arrival of two daughters, Debbie (Tom) and Rexie Lynn (Jess). Sarah cherished her years as a stay-at-home mother, often saying that watching her daughters grow was her greatest joy.

After about six years in Colorado, the family moved to Monroe, Louisiana. Sarah joined American Bank, now known as Regions, and built a remarkable 34-year career there, retiring as Vice President. She loved banking, anything to do with math, and always put her heart into helping customers and colleagues.

Sarah’s life outside work was just as full. For more than 50 years, she’s been part of North Monroe Baptist Church, teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir. She joined the Southern Sass line dancing group, played with her local Pokeno club, and bowled in a league. She loved to travel, visiting Alaska, Hawaii, the Mediterranean, Rome, Turkey, and Venice. Closer to home, she especially enjoyed trips to Branson and Gatlinburg with Rex, admiring wood carvings—Rex himself was a talented wood carver.

Today, Sarah enjoys life at Legacy Village. Her family has grown to five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and she loves spending time with them. She stays active in the community, playing bingo, attending church, joining games of cornhole, and walking and talking with friends.

Cleveland, Tenn. (Nov. 2025) — At Legacy Village of Cleveland, the health and safety of our residents and team members is our highest priority. As part of our commitment to providing a clean, healthy, and supportive environment, we have replaced traditional cleaning chemicals with a safer, more sustainable solution.

Legacy Village of Cleveland has partnered with Viking Pure Solutions, a leader in non-toxic cleaning technologies, to bring innovative, hospital-grade cleaning and disinfecting to our community. Viking Pure installs on-site systems that generate powerful cleaning and disinfecting solutions using only salt, water, and electricity. This process creates electrolyzed water: a safe, fragrance-free, and highly effective alternative to conventional chemicals.

Unlike many commercial cleaning products, Viking Pure’s solutions are free from harmful ingredients linked to respiratory issues, endocrine disruption, and other health concerns that disproportionately affect older adults. Their disinfectant is EPA-registered as hospital grade and proven to kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses, including norovirus and COVID-19, without the risks associated with harsh chemicals.

Bryan Cook, Co-Founder and President of Legacy Senior Living, states, “Our residents deserve the safest environment possible. With Viking Pure, we’re not just cleaning, we’re protecting the people who call this community home, as well as the caregivers and staff who support them every day.”

In addition to enhancing safety, Viking Pure helps us reduce our environmental footprint. We now generate unlimited quantities of solution on-site, eliminating supply chain concerns and reducing waste from plastic bottles and chemical deliveries.

“This upgrade aligns with our mission of providing compassionate care in a safe, sustainable setting. Viking Pure’s system gives us confidence that we’re doing everything we can to promote wellness, without compromise,” says Barry Ray, Co-Founder and CEO of Legacy Senior Living.

Some lives unfold like a beautiful symphony, each movement shaped by adventure, faith, and quiet strength. That’s certainly true for Martha Lessig of The Harbor at Legacy Village of Cleveland, whose story spans continents, cultures, and decades of devotion.

Martha was born in Nashville, Tennessee, on March 30, 1933. Her earliest adventures began far from home, as she spent her childhood in Chile while her parents served as missionaries. Surrounded by both Spanish and English, Martha’s world grew wide and colorful. These early experiences gave her a deep appreciation for language, culture, and faith.

At sixteen, Martha made a courageous leap and returned alone to the United States for college. She bravely settled in with an aunt she had never met, showing remarkable independence for someone so young. Her journey carried her from Memphis to Chattanooga, where she met her future husband, George Lessig. Together, they built a life rooted in love and service, sharing sixty-three remarkable years side by side.

Music was a constant thread in Martha’s life. For over fifty years, she played piano and organ in churches and at community gatherings, using her talents to bring people together and create moments of joy. She found friendship and fellowship in her local music club, always eager to celebrate the arts with others.

Later, Martha took on a new calling as a social worker, offering compassion and strength to those who needed support. Through her work, she touched countless lives, always with a gentle spirit and an open heart.

Martha is the proud mother of two children and grandmother to two grandchildren. After retiring in her early eighties in 2018, she made her home in Cleveland, Tennessee, where she continues to be cherished by family, friends, and all who have the pleasure of knowing her. Whether through a warm smile, a kind word, or the memory of a favorite hymn, Martha’s legacy is a testament to courage, faith, and the enduring power of kindness.

Her story reminds us that a life filled with music, love, and service leaves echoes that last, often long after the final note is played.

Joyce’s story begins in York, Pennsylvania, where she was born to Dean and Doris Snyder. Growing up in the North York school system with her brother, Bruce, Joyce filled her days with the kinds of memories that last a lifetime—playing outside for hours with neighborhood friends, staying busy with the Y-Club and Girl Scouts, and soaking up the simple joys of small town life.

Her father, Dean, ran his own exterminating business, with Joyce’s mom, Doris, right by his side as secretary. While their parents built the family business together, Joyce and Bruce found their own adventures just outside the front door, surrounded by the laughter and camaraderie of childhood friends.

After graduating from Central High School, Joyce began working at the local 5 and Dime Store. She soon moved on to jobs at Woolworths and McCrory’s, where she not only gained valuable experience but also made friendships that would last decades.

It was through one of these dear friends that Joyce met James Corbett. Their introduction was serendipitous—just a visit that turned into something so much more. A quick connection led to dating, then to engagement, and now, nearly sixty years later, their love story is still going strong. Joyce and James have two sons, Scott (married to Jennifer) and Brian, three cherished grandchildren—Taylor, Haley, and Ryan—and three great-grandchildren: Cassie, Avia, and Clair, with another baby girl joining the family soon.

While James built his career at Peach Bottom Power Plant, Joyce poured her heart into being a homemaker. She loved raising their sons, cheering them on at baseball and soccer games, and supporting them in archery competitions. Joyce was a devoted den mom during their Boy Scouts days, always there with encouragement and a helping hand.

When James retired after 26 years, the couple took the chance to travel and spend time together in the mountains. But James missed working, so the family made the move to Tennessee, where he joined TVA until his second retirement.

Joyce has always found ways to be involved and make a difference. She’s been a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and has a passion for quilting, gardening, and crocheting. She’s also enjoyed many happy hours with her social club friends, especially when a good game was involved.

Today, Joyce’s warmth and positivity continue to shine here at Legacy Village of Cleveland. She’s the first to greet you with a smile, always up for a game of bingo or dominoes, and never misses daily devotions. Joyce lifts the spirits of those around her, and we’re truly grateful she chose Legacy Village as her home.

If you ever find yourself captivated by an English accent and a twinkle in the eye during Bingo at Legacy Village of Cleveland, you’ve likely already met Gwynfa “Gwyn” Leimbach. With a life story that spans continents, war eras, and family adventures, Gwyn’s presence brings a sense of history—and heart—to our community.

Gwyn was born the youngest of nine spirited children in Colchester, England, to Ernest and Elizabeth (“Bessie”) Fairweather. Her childhood was filled with laughter, the loyal companionship of her dog Spot, and the kind of mischief only a house full of siblings can stir up. Even as a young girl, Gwyn found joy in friendship: she met her lifelong best friends, Brenda and Thelma, in elementary school—a bond that would last a lifetime.

School days were happy ones for Gwyn, especially when she was learning Spelling, Music, and Geography at East Ward High. She and Thelma once hopped on their bicycles with a local cycling club and rode all the way to Newmarket racetrack—an astonishing 110-mile journey powered by youthful energy and curiosity.

After high school, Gwyn’s days were split between working in a Colchester clothing factory office and studying business at night at Northeast Essex College of Arts and Science. She graduated with a business degree, then set off for London, where she became secretary to the manager at Fat Stock Marketing in Knightsbridge. London was bustling, exciting, and full of opportunity—but fate had something unforgettable in store.

One evening, during her night school years, Gwyn went to a dance at The Corn Exchange, a lively local hall. There she met Gil Leimbach, a young American Fighter Pilot stationed at Shepherd’s Grove US Air Force Base. Sparks flew. The two began a courtship that spanned three and a half years, countless train rides between Colchester and London, and a flurry of letters and phone calls after Gil returned to the States. Nine months later, Gil came back to England with a question—and Gwyn said yes.

They married in Baltimore, Maryland, honeymooned there, and soon found themselves on the move: first to Oklahoma City, then Arizona’s Luke Air Force Base, and eventually all the way to Japan for three remarkable years. With every new posting came adventure, and along the way, Gwyn and Gil welcomed three children—Jim, Jayne, and Robert. The family grew to include one beloved grandchild, Nicole.

After Japan, Tampa, Florida, became home while Gil served at MacDill Air Force Base, and then completed two tours in Vietnam before retiring from the Air Force after 21 years. Gwyn embraced her role as a stay-at-home mother and threw herself into community work with the Air Force Officers’ Wife Club, always finding ways to bring people together and support her neighbors.

Retirement brought more family travels—especially to the Great Smoky Mountains, back to England, and, best of all, to the beach, Gwyn’s favorite destination. She’s always loved a good book (Bill O’Reilly is a favorite author) and has a steadfast faith, first as a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Tampa, and now at First Lutheran Church of Cleveland.

After losing her beloved Gil in 2020, Gwyn moved to Tennessee to be closer to her family. Here at Legacy Village, she has become a cherished part of our community—never missing a chance to play Bingo, quick to spark up a conversation, and always eager to share stories about her English roots and the love of her life, Gil.

We’re grateful every day for Gwyn’s warmth, wisdom, and gentle humor. Her journey reminds us all that home is less about a place and more about the people you share it with. We’re truly blessed to have Gwyn as part of our Legacy Village family.

Helen Ballard Portman’s story begins in Augusta, Georgia, but her true roots took hold in Rome, Georgia, where her family settled when she was just four. The third of six lively siblings, Helen’s childhood was filled with the warmth of a bustling household, the gentle ticking of her father’s clocks, and the everyday lessons her parents quietly taught by example.

Her father, Robert M. Ballard, spent his career at the Georgia Power Company, but he was best known around town as “Grandaddy Tick Tock”—the beloved local clock doctor whose kindness was as dependable as his repairs. Helen’s mother, Lena Scott Ballard, was the steady center of the family, raising six children while volunteering as a Grey Lady at the hospital and serving with the Junior Service League at the Chieftains Museum.

Helen and her siblings—Bobby, Sissy, Judy, Dixie, and Jack—filled their home with energy and laughter. She attended East Rome Grammar School, Rome Junior High, and Rome High School, where her spirited personality made her a favorite among classmates. She was a cheerleader, Homecoming Queen, and Class Favorite, known for her bright smile and generous heart as much as her beauty.

After high school, Helen attended Shorter College in Rome for two years. Though she promised her father she’d earn her degree, fate intervened one summer at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, North Carolina. There, she met William “Bill” Madison Portman—a youth group leader with striking blue eyes—and the connection was instant. They married in June of 1955 and shared 55 years together until Bill’s passing in 2014.

Their journey together took them to Danville, Virginia, Charleston, South Carolina, and finally Hendersonville, Tennessee, where Bill dedicated his life to youth ministry through the YMCA. Over 37 years, he rose to Senior Vice President of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee and continued to support struggling branches in retirement. Helen, ever his partner, built a home centered on faith, family, and creativity.

The Portmans loved exploring the country with family and friends, filling their lives with music, adventure, and tradition. They attended concerts—Elvis and Celine Dion were favorites— and cheered for the University of Kentucky basketball team, traveling to Rupp Arena for games and joining friends for Kentucky Oaks and Derby parties in Louisville.

Helen and Bill raised two daughters: Pamela Quinn and Jodi Tillotson, who has been married to Rodney Tillotson for over thirty years. Helen’s legacy shines brightly through her six grandchildren—Reid, Ashlyn, and Parker Tillotson, and Sarah, Laura, and Kelli Quinn Schwartz—and three great-grandchildren: Ruthie, Whitsun, and Revere Schwartz.

Helen balanced family and work with quiet strength. She spent years shaping young minds as a kindergarten teacher before moving into banking, where she worked in bookkeeping and as a teller at Citizens Bank of Hendersonville until retirement. Her commitment extended to her church as well. Once a member of Rome First United Methodist Church, she became deeply involved with First Baptist Church of Hendersonville—leading the kindergarten program, arranging sanctuary flowers, and sharing her warmth in countless ways.

Throughout her adult life, Helen has treasured friendships—none more so than the “BeBop Gang,” a group of lifelong friends (including one she’s known since age four). Though time and distance have changed their gatherings, their laughter and love continue to brighten her days.

Some of Helen’s happiest moments are the annual Christmas gatherings at her parents’ home, where generations come together to celebrate family and tradition. These joyful reunions are a testament to her belief in the power of connection—a love that continues to inspire all who know her.

Helen Ballard Portman’s life is a tapestry of kindness, resilience, and generosity—a legacy woven not only into her family, but into the hearts of everyone lucky enough to call her a friend.

Cleveland, Tenn. (July 2025) — Team members of Legacy Village of Cleveland are proud to announce their completion of Legacy Senior Living’s SERVE training program. The SERVE program, created by Legacy Senior Living leadership, is a commitment to providing the best training tools possible for team members to care for residents and family members with honor, respect, faith and integrity. It is designed to equip team members with the necessary tools to provide exceptional resident care and customer service.

The SERVE training program was birthed from Legacy’s Customer Service Standards. SERVE is an acronym standing for: Speak and Smile, Encourage and Engage, Respond to Residents, Value and Validate, and Every Day is the Extra Mile. The 3-hour training goes beyond standard orientation by providing enhanced customer service tools to team members after they have acclimated to their roles. This strategic approach ensures continued guidance, success and growth for all team members.

Legacy Senior Living, the management company of Legacy Village of Cleveland, believes customer service is a major part in providing an exceptional home-like environment for their residents. This program sets Legacy Village apart by providing unique training requirements for all team members to provide their job duties with confidence and compassion.

The SERVE training is completed by Renita Carnes, Director of Culture and Training. She conducts training through in-person sessions at each community every 6-7 months to accommodate new hires and foster ongoing development. To reinforce key principles, SERVE posters are displayed in team member areas, serving as daily reminders of the commitment to excellence. Recertification is required every 12-18 months to uphold the highest standards.

Cleveland, Tenn. (May 2025) — A Legacy Village of Cleveland team member, Billie Baird, has been named the 2024 ‘Going the Extra Mile Legacy Champion’, a highly distinguished award that is chosen by the Legacy Senior Living leadership team once a year. Legacy Senior Living is the management company supporting Legacy Village of Cleveland, which operates a family of senior living communities throughout the Eastern United States.

The Legacy Champion award is the highest team member recognition and the culminating award in Legacy’s ‘Going the Extra Mile’ customer service program. The team member is selected out of over 1,000 employees company-wide. Every month, each of the Legacy Senior Living communities individually review nominations and select a monthly winner who is awarded $250. At the end of the year, each Legacy community compiles the monthly winners and chooses an annual winner, who is given $500. The Legacy communities then submit their annual winner to the home office, who votes on the company-wide Legacy Champion, and awards them $1000 in front of their co-workers, residents and family members. This year, two team members were selected; Baird and Precious Lurry of Legacy Village of Plantation Manor in Thomasville, Ga. The program encourages residents, family members and co-workers to nominate team members who have excelled in going above and beyond in serving their residents.

The Going the Extra Mile program is a distinguishing hallmark of Legacy Senior Living. The program, created by Co-Founders, Barry Ray and Bryan Cook, is founded on the Bible scripture in Matthew 5:41: “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.” Legacy Senior Living prides themselves on being a faith-based and service-oriented company.

Baird was named the Legacy Champion for going above and beyond in caring for the residents of Legacy Village. Not only does Baird excel as a caregiver, she completed Legacy Village’s Med-Tech class, now also serving in this capacity. Baird has demonstrated her dedication by staying overnight through two recent snowstorms to ensure residents were safe and well cared for. Her continuous positivity is contagious among her coworkers.

Legacy Village of Cleveland completes their bi-annual training to continuously provide the best care possible for memory care residents.

Cleveland, Tenn. (October 2024) — Legacy Village of Cleveland has completed a thorough training for team members working in the memory care neighborhood, The Harbor. The specific, hands-on training equips caregivers and nurses with the necessary tools to care for residents with Alzheimer’s or Dementia in a gentle, loving and knowledgeable approach.

The extensive three-day training is led by Renita Carnes, Director of Culture and Training, who is certified by the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners. The course covers topics such as diagnosis, prognosis and treatment, nutrition, activities and communication. The training is designed to help Legacy’s care team understand the inner workings of someone with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.

“Caring for people with Alzheimer’s and dementia can be a daunting task at times. We want to provide the best possible care for our residents by equipping our team members with a thorough and specific training,” Renita Carnes says. “Only by understanding what these residents go through each day, can our team members be fully equipped to serve our residents with the highest quality of care.”

The training is offered to the Legacy Village team every 6 months to renew certifications and train new team members. Legacy Village of Cleveland is committed to serving the Greatest Generation with honor, respect, faith and integrity.

The bi-annual training for team members at The Harbor is just one of the many features that makes living at Legacy Village unique. The Harbor utilizes a life enrichment program, “The Purposeful Day”, which was created by co-founders, Barry Ray and Bryan Cook. “The Purposeful Day” program is designed to meet the specific needs of each resident and to continue giving them purpose in their later stages of life. The Harbor was also designed with a 1950’s theme, color scheme and décor that takes residents back to a happier time in life.

Another resource for family members, team members or community partners who are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or dementia is Legacy’s Alzheimer’s Support Services. Led by Dr. Ron Harvard, this complimentary resource is designed to give support to families and caregivers who are navigating the pressures of caring for a loved one with memory loss.

“This unique training is such a great tool for our team members to care for our residents with love, gentleness and expertise. If you have a loved one that is experiencing signs or symptoms of memory loss, give Legacy Village of Cleveland a call today. We have amazing resources to set you and your loved one up for success,” said Doug Veazey, COO of Legacy Senior Living.

Cleveland, Tenn. (March, 2024) — Women’s History Month has been observed in the United States for over 35 years. It has been fundamental in recognizing women’s rights and the historical transformation of women’s rights in America. Never will you find women with such rich wisdom, experience, vibrancy and contribution as those living out their Golden Years at a senior living community. Such is the case at Legacy Village of Cleveland, who wish to honor and share the stories of three of their beloved residents: Yvonne Hubbard, Evaline Echols and Bobbie Atchley.

Yvonne Hubbard moved to Cleveland to attend Lee University after high school. She graduated with a degree in Education and taught for a few years as a public-school teacher. Ms. Hubbard’s strong desire to achieve led her back to school to pursue a master’s degree, and eventually a doctorate in Educational Psychology. Upon completion of her degrees and with the urge to serve her country, Ms. Hubbard joined the Army as a medical social worker. She served with the rank of Captain for nine years. After her discharge, she returned to Cleveland and took up a position at Hiwassee Mental Health Center and Tennova Healthcare as a supervisor on the Behavioral Unit. Ms. Hubbard’s final job was a clinical position at the Chattanooga Veteran Center where she treated veterans struggling with PTSD.

Evaline Echols dedicated her life’s work to education. She served at Lee University (called Lee College for most of her tenure) for 59 years. Ms. Echols served as a Professor for Business Communications and served on the Chair of The Business Department. She worked hard to provide the best education for her students by seeking the best education she could provide for herself. While she taught a full schedule, she also attended night classes at UTC to earn her master’s degree, and then continued at LSU to earn her Doctorate in Business Education.

Bobbie Atchley always wanted to be a nurse. In 1960, she earned her LPN and began her career at Bradley Memorial Hospital, where she worked for three years. She then transitioned to Dr. Humphries office where she worked for a little over a decade, during which, she attended evening classes at Cleveland State to earn her RN degree. Ms. Atchley did not stop there – through The University of New York at Albany but on MTSU’s campus, she obtained her Bachelor of Science of Nursing degree, finishing at the top of her class. She obtained a job at Bradley Memorial Hospital where she served for 23 years. Bobbie’s contribution to the nursing field earned her several recognitions, including being awarded Nurse of the Year three times for her district and being in “Who’s Who” three times. Additionally, she served as a delegate for the State and National Conventions of Nursing and on several boards, including the Physician’s Malpractice Board, the NCLEX Boards for LPN’s, the Board for Bradley Memorial Hospice, and the Board of Trustees for Bradley Memorial Hospital.

Legacy Senior Living and Dominion Senior Living to Offer New Alzheimer’s Support Services Headed by Dr. Ronald Harvard

Legacy Senior Living is excited to announce a new Alzheimer's Support Service to families caring for loved one's with memory loss disorders.

Cleveland, Tenn. (Feb. 2024) — Legacy Senior Living and Dominion Senior Living, a family of senior living communities serving the Eastern United States, are excited to announce Alzheimer’s Support Services, a new program for both companies. This is a free service that is designed to give support and resources to families and caregivers who are navigating the pressures of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other memory loss conditions.

Dr. Ronald Harvard has come aboard as the Director of Alzheimer’s Support Services. As a pastor, counselor, college professor and primary caregiver to his late wife, Linda, who suffered from Alzheimer’s for 20 years, Dr. Harvard brings many years of experience to this new program. At various times, Dr. Harvard has served his alma mater, Lee University, as a faculty member in the psychology department, as Director of Counseling, and as an adjunct faculty member at Lee Online. He and Linda also served as senior pastor at churches in Florida, Indiana, and Georgia.

With degrees in Biblical Studies, Social Psychology, and Pastoral Counseling, Dr. Harvard’s love for teaching and counseling have defined his life, but no more so than the love of his life, Linda, and their four children.

Dr. Harvard’s introduction to Alzheimer’s was personal and very painful. In the fall of 2003, Dr. Harvard recognized the beginning signs of memory loss in his late wife, Linda. Fifteen years later, Linda became a resident of a Legacy Senior Living community, The Harbor at Legacy Village of Cleveland. In May of 2023, Linda passed away. Dr. Harvard chronicled his struggles and victories in his blog, “Dementia: walking victoriously through the ‘Long Goodbye,’” offering lessons learned, meditations, and comfort to many.

“What became clear to me during the process of loving Linda through the battle of Alzheimer’s, was that I was being prepared to minister to families going through similar situations. My mission in leading this new Alzheimer’s Support Service is to provide behavioral insights, practical direction and comfort through support groups and one-on-one meetings,” said Dr. Harvard.

“This is a program that we are so excited to offer to families that are struggling with the challenges of memory loss. We are eager to welcome Dr. Harvard to this position as he supports other family members and caregivers navigating this overwhelming season,” said Barry Ray, CEO and Co-Founder of Legacy Senior Living.

Tracy Hansel and Billie Baird are two treasured team members who continuously exude their heart and passion for serving the residents at Legacy Village of Cleveland.

Tracy joined the Legacy team as a caregiver prior to the opening of Legacy Village in September 2018. She quickly displayed her leadership skills and true passion for serving the residents of Legacy Village. She was promoted to lead caregiver and began to have an imperative role in training new caregivers, supervising caregivers, as well as other responsibilities. In 2021, Tracy worked diligently to obtain her CNA certification and ultimately received her MedTech certification in April 2023.

Billie was hired as a lead CNA in August 2021 and immediately began playing a vital role in training new team members, as well as supervising other caregivers. She instantly flourished in this position, and she eventually decided to pursue her MedTech certification. Billie became a certified MedTech in July 2022 and continues to love and care for the residents in this role.

“Both Tracy and Billie are exceptionally passionate and gifted! We are thrilled to have seen each of them grow professionally into this new level of responsibility. It is an honor to have them as a part of the Legacy team. We believe our care and services are better because of the hard work that they, along with all our caregivers, put in every day,” Destiny Helms, executive director of Legacy Village of Cleveland, said.

The care package items were donated by the Legacy Senior Living Support Center and were given to Hope for Appalachia Virginia, Inc., a non-profit organization that brings basic necessities to children in some of the poorest areas in the Appalachian Mountains. Each box was marked for a boy or girl in the second grade.

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (December 2, 2021) – Legacy Village of Cleveland, a premier assisted living and memory care community serving Bradley County received a special donation of two hand-painted ducks from the Cleveland Public Arts Committee.

The community placed one of the colorful ducks on the assisted living veranda and the other in The Harbor courtyard, which is dedicated to memory care, so that all residents would have the opportunity to enjoy them.

“We are so grateful to everyone at the Cleveland Public Arts Committee for this wonderful gift. The ducks have been an immediate hit with our residents, who have already fallen in love with them. It means so much to us to know that our community cares about our seniors,” Executive Director Christina Clevenger said.

The yellow duck, which was presented to The Harbor, was originally painted by Beth and Becky Hetzel from Hetzel Art Studios and sponsored by the Mark Johnson Family. Johnson’s mother is currently a resident at Legacy Village of Cleveland.
